Tipping Point The Coming Global Weather Crisis is an indepth examination of weather conditions over the last 400,000 years,
examining volcanic eruptions and the effects of both Carbon Dioxide and Methane gas on the environment and on the history of mankind.

Only from the past can we forecast what the future may bring and four times in the last 400,000 years as soon as it has reached maximum temperature an Ice Age has rapidly started. The melting of the Arctic Ice Pack is the tipping point that throws us into another ice age.

So What happens after the Arctic Ice pack melts? Does it just keep getting so hot that the earth melts down? I don't think so. We are very near the end of the current warm period that has lasted 16,000 years, the end is long overdue and only lasted this long because man learned to use fire and the resulting smog cooled the atmosphere slightly - prolonging the current warm period.

In the depths of the last Ice Age, over 8 million square miles of ice covered the continents. This changed the very geography of the Earth and many shallow seas now covered by ocean were above sea level. The then mostly dry Aegean Sea in the Eastern Mediterranean was likely habitable and a Garden of Eden for over 80,000 years – giving man a safe haven from both beasts and massive volcanic eruptions.

I theorize on the meteorological and oceanographic conditions that allowed glaciers to form and last for 100,000 years, plus what effect miles of ice had on continents, oceans and man. What is was like for men and animals living next to a glacier and how did we survive eruptions that destroyed the Earths Ozone layer?

Abrupt weather changes have occurred in the past, when conditions existed almost exactly like they are today. Data from Ice cores taken from glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica have shown us that transition into the next Ice Age comes very rapidly after the warm peak is reached.

Granted this is rapid on a geologic timeframe. But it is also true that one day in Canada and Eurasia, the winter will bring a solid freeze and this ice will not melt for 36 million days (approximately 100,000 years).

It really pains me to sit down and write a negative review, especially about a book written by a veteran. And yet if the whole Amazon marketing system is to work, bad reviews are sometimes necessary.

This book is poorly organized, repetitive to the point of being painful to read, and apparently benefited from little or perhaps even no skilled editing at all. Even worse, its core theory-- that the Ice Ages began as the result of an ice-free Arctic Ocean-- isn't particularly new or original, though the author certainly seems to think so. (I myself first encountered it as a possible explanation during a geology lecture in about 1982.) The most interesting part of the book-- a rather fascinating up-close description of a volcano erupting seen in real-life by the author-- was at best only marginally related to the core topic, and only lasted 2-3 pages.

When one buys a non-fiction book, one may fairly expect that the information will be delivered in a manner at least as coherent and organized as a college lecture. This book fails that test, which is a shame because even if the author's theory isn't brand new it's still a very interesting one that doesn't get nearly enough exposure. Also, if he's correct, we as a world are preparing for exactly the _wrong_ disaster.

My final thought is this-- no writer can succeed without a skilled editor, and I hope that this author finds one. He has something important to say, but undermines his own case via both gross disorganization and grammatical abominations such as "could of". He _could_ be a contender, in short-- he certainly has the academic credentials and the ability to think originally. He needs a little help with the presentation, is all.

Tipping Point The Coming Global Weather Crisis Michael Little Reviews

This is a self published thesis that was not properly edited. It appears to be a hurried collection of talking points. But, the points are well made. I found the book fascinating, shocking, frightening, and am very glad to have read it.
Sad. The book contains some useful and apparently important information, however, the writing conceals much of this information. Basic premise is that the world is on the cusp of another ice age. Book explains how this will likely happen and reveals facts about previous ice ages that I was unaware of. But there are so many problems with the book I could not in good conscience recommend it to a friend who believes global warming will last into the distant future. Why? Well, first is that, although the author was an Aerographers Mate and therefore should have a fairly good scientific background, there are blatant errors throughout the text. Biggest one that constantly grates on the reader and in some cases obscures the message is that the author does not appear to know the difference between "area" and "volume". He constantly uses square miles where cubic miles is the correct unit. One example of many; "...volume is thousands of thousands of square meters.... Afraid not. There are statements like "...magma was forced out of the magma...". Huh? And there are grammatical errors that even a non-English student like me can pick out; "...cloud layer is break and...". Although I assume all of the facts are not the authors, there are no references cited so we could verify the facts or delve deeper into them. Better proof reading and editing should have been done. And, finally, the book repeats and repeats the same information. I didn't count but some data is repeated at least 4 or 5 times and in a few cases repeated number ranges change. Bottom line; there is valuable information in the book, but getting it out is going to require patience and enough scientific knowledge to be able to sort through the incorrect units of measurement.
